Gaia – our planet

“Evolution is a tightly coupled dance, with life and the material environment as partners. From the dance emerges the entity Gaia.” – James Lovelock

Originally in the Greek mythology, Gaia was the personification of the Earth and a goddess. Now, Gaia has become a theory about our planet. It says that the whole Earth is a system that is regulated by itself, as if “she” was alive.

I think that it’s a beautiful theory, looking at the Earth as if it was an entity. Also I have to say that we should treat it as a person (it may sound crazy),but I mean that we should respect more the Earth. We should think about our relation with her  as a business (it’s more than that, I know). In a business always the two parts get something that benefits them, so in our case, instead of only receiving from the Earth, we should give too. Because I think that’s the only way that a relation with our planet will work. As Terri Swearingen said:”we are living on this planet as we had another one to go“, and she was right. Now we are in the process of destroying it and it has no sense because it’s like we are destroying our homes on purpose. So I encourage you all to think about it for a moment and If you can, take every chance to visit all of the different places from the Earth that you can while it lasts, because we don’t know what will happen in the future.

This photo was taken in Ibiza, from a trip a did last summer to visit a friend. I have to say that I’m still in love with that place, it was beautiful!

  1. Love the idea of Gaia (heard this the first time from some of Isaac Asimov’s books). A planet is no less alive than any tree or mountain is, I guess. And yes, somehow we have this strange habit of attacking it.

  2. I heard of this theory in class and in that moment I loved it. It took all of my attention, it was very interesting. I’m happy that someone love it too!
